31, First Traffic Victim of Year
DeLaval Worker Crushed In His Automobile
Edward Ollivett, 31, Pleasant Valley, was killed at 4:30 o'clock, yesterday afternoon
when his 1936 coach was in collision in Dutchess turnpike with another vehicle
near Mickey's tavern, west of Pleasant Valley. County Medical Examiner, Powell
said and examination showed Mr. Ollivett died of a broken neck and crushed chest.*
Charles Baartz, 50, Pleasant Valley painter, described by authorities as the
operator of the second vehicle involved in Dutchess county's first highway fatal
accident of 1949, was injured. He was taken to Vassar hospital and admitted after
being attended for multiple abrasions, shock and contusions of the right shoulder.
His condition at the hospital today was described as good. State Trooper John
Hogan, South Millbrook, Under sheriff Crapser and Deputies Gardiner and Bassett
investigated the accident, which occurred on the slippery snow covered highways.
Trooper Hogan said Mr. Ollivett was on his way to his home from work at the DeLaval
Separator plant, and Mr. Baartz was driving his 1941 sedan West in Dutchess turnpike
at the time of the accident. Trooper Hogan said Mr. Baartz told authorities that
Mr. Ollivett's coach skidded in the snow just before the cars collided. Trooper
Hogan said that a river of a bread truck had told other persons that he witnessed
the accident. The trooper said, the driver of the truck is not known, but authorities
are anxious to consult him to obtain details of the accident. Hogan said that
the only account of the mishap is the one given by Mr. Bart. Trooper Hagen said
that the right front of the Bart car was smashed and the entire front of the
Ollivett coach was damaged. When nearby resident and motorists reached the Ollivett
car, they told authorities they found the driver pinned by the steering wheel
and the dash board. Dr. George Ben vie, Pleasant Valley was called and he pronounced
Mr. Ollivett dead. Private funeral services for Mr. Ollivett will be conducted
at the Allen Funeral Home in Pleasant Valley, Monday. The Rev. John H.Hatt, minister
of the Pleasant Valley Presbyterian Church will officiate. Burial will be in
the Presbyterian cemetery, Pleasant Valley. Fir ends may call at the funeral
home tomorrow night. A native of this city, Mr. Ollivett had resided here until
approximately 10 years ago. He was born July 15, 1917, the son of Mrs. Marguerite
Cassedy Ollivett and the late Harry Ollivett. He was educated in local schools
and employed at the DeLaval Separator Co., for a number of years. Surviving in
addition to his wife, Mrs. Dorothy Vosburgh Ollivett: a daughter, Diane** Ollivett
; his maternal grandparents Mr. and Mrs. William C. Crosby, here; two brothers,
Harry Crosby Ollivett and Warren Lloyd Ollivett, Pleasant Valley; and four sisters,
Mrs. Hull G. Way, Jr. Pleasant Valley, Mrs. George DeLucas, Philadelphia, and
Mrs. Burton Whitaker and Miss Jeannette Ollivett, here."
* My father carried a large iron anvil in the trunk of his car to aid in the
assent of the hill on Traver Road to reach our home there.
** My name is Diane Cassedy Ollivett, not Diana!
I have always know in my heart that it was no accident, and with good reason,
I doubt very much the veracity of the account of the other driver.
My father's death was also my first memorable psychic experience, I knew before
I started home that he was dead, I went out of body with him to the scene of
the crash and witnessed the anguish of my Uncle Bing and though afraid to tell
Mother what I had experienced, tried to prepare her for the horrible news that
my Uncle Warren would soon bring.
This record is for my cousins, Carol who was very young then and Karen who was
not yet born when this happened. Your parents were my life support and salvation.
Aunt Ann to talk to and cry on and Aunt Audrey to keep me occupied, playing with
the new baby, piano and just being good company, like Aunt Ann.. And, dear cousins,
you too played a great part in my recovery from Daddy's death, you were there
to fuss over, play with and love. A love which you both returned to me many
times over.
Aunt Edith and Linda, you and Uncle Hull helped too as did Aunt Midgie and Uncle
George who took me in while Mother went to school. I love you all, but it was
Aunt Ann, Uncle Bing and Aunt Audrey and my friend Margie that were my day to
day support and I thank God for all of you!

- Edward A. Collier, D.D., A History of Old Kinderhook (G.P.
Putnam's Sons NY & London 1914), pg 55 - 56. the order of division by lot of
the Groote Stuck was isssued; actual posession in severalty, however not to take
place until Fall, after the grain had been harvested. The actual actual division
was made in 1682.
"the same year (1680) Gerrit Teunisse asks the Court to compel Peter Vosburgh
to fulfill a contract which the former has made in the presence of witnesses
to sell him (Vosburgh) lad for 120 bevers in six years or sixty bevers cash."
So we see Peter was all ready expanding his holdings before the actual division
of the Groote Stuck was complete.
Further into the book on the chapter, "Land-Litigation", page 63 there is listed
the names of Burger Huyck, Lambert Huyack, Peter Van Alane, Johannes Vosburgh,
Jochim Kallier (proably Collier), Isaac Vosburgh, John Van Alstyne, Johannis
Ten Broeck and Casper Rouse as owners of lands in the Northof Kinderhook and
a grant to Peter Vosburgh of 1900 acres includein the whole northern part of
the district south of Rensselaerswyck and east of the De Bruyn patent, the two
lakes and the Gardinier grant. on page 64 it is indicated that this tract exceeded
1908 acres and had 5 undesignated dwellings upon it. Since this area was the
only in the Valley free of the patroon system, it would seem that Peter and his
brothers and children were large landholders and prosperous.

The freeholders Isaac and Jacob ffosburge (Vosburgh) were brothers. Their father
was Abraham Piertsen Vosburgh, son of Pieter Jacobse who was in Beverwyck about
the yeat 1630. Abraham, spoken of as a cooper and an carpenter, was in 1654 a
successful fur-trader.
Isaac Vosburgh, a carpenter and trader, married Anna Janse Goes.

Isaac Vosburgh, a carpenter and trader
"Isaac Vosburgh, the youngest of the three brothers, was born about 1658. He
is the progenitor of a large branch of the family, a restless branch, strongly
characterized with the pioneer instincts. His descendants spread out in all directions;
within two generations we find them in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont, the
Mohawk Valley and the province of Quebec. ".
- Edward A. Collier, D.D., A History of Old Kinderhook. pg
98The decendants of Isaac, Jacob, and Peter Vosbyrgh also a freeholder here,
became very numerous, and the name a prominent one in public and private life.
Isaac Vosburgh, a carpenter and trader, married Anna Jane Goes.n.

The freeholder Jan Tysse Goes (Hoes) was a son of Matthys Jansse who is reported
as being in Beverwyck in 1661. In addition to his widely scattered allotments
of land, under the division of the Kinderhook Patent of 1686, he was the owner
of a fourth of a part of the Groote Stuk. His first wife was Brechje Maryna,
widow of Claes Cornelise Van Voorhout. He married secondly, Styntje Janse Van
Hoosen and died in 1705. He was the ancestor of all of the several families
named Goes (Hoes) in the town and county; families which have included many of
eminent name and valued service in evry walk of life. His sons, named as names
in the foregoing chapter, were holdrs of large estates and engaged in manifold
activities. His daughters married, as heretofore stated, men of eminent character
and standing and thus connected the Hoes family with nearly every other of notable
name. Martin Van Buren's mother and wife were both descendants of Jan Tysse.
Such also were Peter S. Hoes, Rev. Dr. John C. F. Hoes, and Pierre Van Buren
Hoes, deceased. Among the living, we name William M. Hoes of New York, Chaplain
Roswell Randall Hoes of the United States Navy, Mr. J. Howard Van Buren, of Nyack,
and Mr. P. Ernest Hoes (lawyer) now of New York City and Yonkers.

In the Albany County Clerk's Office (Deeds, E. pp.156-7), we find recorded the
agreement of the children of John Tysse Goes(1711) as to the division of his
estate in accordance with the terms of his will, dated 1708.
As this agreement, even more than the original will, is instructive in several
respects, we quote its substance.
Promising that the will made ample provision for the support and comfort of his
wife, Styntie, and that his eldes son, Matthias (Tyse), was to have one cow and
forty shilligns for his birthright, also "the small creeck", and the testor's
interest in a mill owned in partnership with Peter Schuyler and Sybrant Van Schaak,
the substance, and in part the precise language of the agreement, is as follows:
To his sons, John and Dirk, all his real and personal estate. etc:
tMatthias Goes, eldest son of John Tysse, agrees with his brothers John and Dirk
for himslef and for his sisters Anna, wife of Isaac Vosburgh; Teuntie, wife
of Jacon Turk; Judick, wife of Isaac Huldricks and Majaka, wife of Burger Huyck.

Several remarks re all the brothers.

"The latter is shown by a hitherto unpublished letter fo Jeremias van Rensselaer
to his brothet, Jan Baptist can Renselaer, dated June 6, 1660, which reads in
part as follows:"Clabbort (Thomas Chambers) escaped, but Hap (Jacob Jansen Stol)
and eight or nine others were barbarously put to death by burning, scorching,
hacking and cutting, among whom was alos our neighbor, Abraham Piertersz Vosburgh,
who had been working in Esopus.".

The freeholder Lambert Jansen Van Alstyne was a son of Jan Martense. He married,
about 1682 Jsannetje daughter of Thomas Janse Mingael and Marritje Abramse Vosburgh.
Their eight children were: Catherine, who married Bartholomus, son of Jochen
Van Valkenburgh and Eva Hendricks Vrooman
Marritje
Thomas who married Maria, daughter of William Van Alen and Marritje Van Patten
Johannes, bp. 1691
Dirckje, bp. 1695 married Peter Vosburgh
Antje, b[. 1698
Annatje, bp 1700
Pieter bp. 1702
Lambert's tract of 698 acres was on the east side of the creek and adjoining
the estate of his father on the west. It included the present Lindenwald estate.
His wife was his first cousin once removed and was evidently much younger than
himself, for in 1713 she married Lambertse Van Valkenburgh as her second husband
and became the mother of five additional children.
