Cassady's Corners
About one mile east of Viola, on the New City road, we come to the well known
landmark of our town, Cassady's corners. Located almost in the center of the
town, at a point where several roads intersect, this, for over 60 years, was
the place for town meetings. Marking the site at present are but two houses,
and a blacksmith shop built about 1850, and now owned and run by Mr. W. H. Rose.
It may be of interest to know that, during the 94 years of our existance as a
town, town meetings have been held for 11 years, or vetween 1791 and 1801, at
the house of Theunis Cuyper, just southeast of the brick church; for 61 years,
or between 1802 and 1862 inclusive, at Cassady Corners; and for 22 years from
1863 to 1884 inclusivel, at Monsey.
While at Cassady Corners, they were hled from 1802-18, at Archiblad Cassady's;
from 1819-29, at Elizabeth Cassady's his widow; from 1830-36 at Isaac Finch's;
from 1834-51, at Archibald Cassayd's (son of former); from 1852-54, at Oliver
Crum's; in 1855, at Cornelius B. Haring's; in 1856, at John Onderdonk's; in 1857
and 1858, at Joseph Washburn's; from 1859-1862, at David Ackerman's.

is of Huguenot origin, and the name was originally spelled "Garnier", but like
many other French names, has been changed from its original form. The ancestor
of this family was Isaac Garnier, whose will, dated July 7th 1727, mentions his
wife Elizabeth, and children.
Francois (the eldest son), came to this country from Westchester, and on Nove
27th 1729 he purchased from Thomas Barker "of Cow Neck, Long Island", Lot No.
6, in "Concklin's range" in Kakiat. This is now (in 1884) the homestead and
farm of Josiah Concklin, near the head of the mountain in the town of Ramapo,
and the old house stood a short distance east of the present residence.
Francois was the father of ten children.

It may with justice be said that no attorney in the valley of the Hudson has
displayed more profound knowledge of the law or keener discriminative qualities
than the gentleman whose name introduces this sketch, and who is conceded to
stand among the leading members of the Bar in the state. With his son William
F., he conducts a large and remunerative general practice, extending into various
courts. Since 1865 his offices have been located on Third Street, where he occupies
two floors, and he has one of the most extensive law libraries in Orange County.
In the neighboring county of Rockland, in the town of Ramapo, the subject of
this notices was born November 28, 1833. On the paternal side he is of Irish
descent, his grandfather, Archibald Cassedy, who was born on the 21st of November,

a prosperous agriculturist. In religious belief he was a Presbyterian. He married

died in 1819, his wife surviving him; she lived to reach the age of ninety-six
years. Among their children was Archibald, our subject's father, who was born

native place. In the War of 1812 he was Lieutenant and Adjutant. From 1844 to
1847 he was Sheriff of Rockland County, having been elected to that office upon
the Democratic ticket. At a somewhat advanced age he moved to Brooklyn, and died
there in 1862, aged sixty-seven years. The mother of the subject of this sketch,
Lydia Gurnee, was born in Ramapo, December 3, 1796 and died in Brooklyn, NY,
aged eighty-seven years. The Gurnee family was of Huguenot origin, and the name
was originally Garnier, the ancestor living in Paris. Isaac Garnier, a descendant
lived in Westchester County, and died leaving a wife, Elizabeth, and three children,
one of whom was Francois. He moved to a place that was known as Kakiat, now the
town of Ramapo in 1729. He left ten children, one of whom, John, was born in
1729, who married Abigail Coe, daughter of John Coe. They left several children,
one of whom was John J., born March 13, 1763, who married Nancy Stryker, of New
Jersey, who was of Holland descent. They left several children, and among them
was Lydia, our subject's mother. Of her union, four children were born, of whom
Abraham S. is the only son and now the only survivor. His education was commenced
in the district schools and further prosecuted in the Normal School of Albany,
from which he was graduated. Ambitious to enter the legal profession, he began
the study of law under Judge Frazer, of Rockland County, later reading with Wilkin
& Gott, of Goshen. Shortly after his admission to the Bar in 1857, he was appointed
Deputy County Clerk under Charles Drake, and served in that capacity for two
years, after which he opened an office for the practice of his profession in
Newburgh. While in the main, Mr. Cassedy has devoted his attention to professional
duties, yet he has at times been chosen to serve his fellow-citizens in an official
capacity. Though invariably declining nominations for legislative or congressional
positions, he has always been willing to promote the welfare of Newburgh by accepting
such positions as it has seemed best, in the interest of the people, for him
to fill. In 1862 he was elected District Attorney of Orange County, and continued
in that position until 1865. In 1880 and 1881 he was elected Mayor on the Democratic
ticket, notwithstanding the fact that Newburgh usually gives a large Republican
majority. During his administration the Quassick Creek Bridge was built, the
West Shore Railroad was commenced, and the first steps were taken to perfect
arrangements for the Centennial Celebration. From 1869 to 1883 Mr. Cassedy was
in partnership with Charles F. Brown, the firm of Cassedy & Brown acquiring a
large clientage. The connection was dissolved when Mr. Brown became a Judge of
the Supreme Court. Since 1886 Mr. Cassedy has been in partnership with his son
under the name of A.S. & W.F. Cassedy. In 1875 he was chosen Corporation Counsel,
filling the position for three years. In 1874 he was made a member of the Board
of education, and served one year as its President, declining nomination for
a second term. Perhaps Mr. Cassedy gained greater distinction through his connection
with the West Shore Railroad than in any other enterprise with which he has been
identified. He was attorney at Newburgh for the North River Construction Company,
that built the West Shore Railroad. In behalf of the company his firm paid out
about $7000,000 to procure the right of way through the city and immediate vicinity.
He was local attorney for the West Shore, and afterward for the receivers. In
October, 1885, the court appointed him referee in the matter of the foreclosure
sale of the road, and in November of that year he sold the road at the Newburgh
Court House for $22,000,000, and distributed the proceeds among the creditors.
It is worthy of note that in making this distribution, he issued one check for
$1,068,000, and three others for more than $500,000 each. Formerly he was local
attorney for the Erie, and now holds a similar position with the West Shore and
Wallkill Railroads. For many years Mr. Cassedy has been a Director of the Quassiak
National Bank and is also its attorney. His property interests in Newburgh and
St. Paul are valuable and extensive. In partnership with E. T. Skidmore, he bought
the A. J. Downing property of ex-Mayor Carson in 1889, and on a portion of this
he erected a handsome residence for his family. In 1861 he was united in marriage
with Miss Margaret J. Drake, who was born in Ulster County and is a daughter
of Dr. Charles Drake, a prominent physician of Newburgh ad at one time Clerk
of Orange County. They have two sons, William F. and Frank H., and both were
admitted to the bar on the same day, the former being in partnership with his
father, while the latter is engaged in practice alone. Socially Mr. Cassedy is
a demitted member of the Masonic fraternity. In religious beliefs he is a Presbyterian
and is Trustee of the First Church.".

- Poughkeepsie New Yorker, Vol. LXVII, No. 232. "Ollivett,
31, First Traffic Victim of Year
DeLaval Worker Crushed In His Automobile
Edward Ollivett, 31, Pleasant Valley, was killed at 4:30 o'clock, yesterday afternoon
when his 1936 coach was in collision in Dutchess turnpike with another vehicle
near Mickey's tavern, west of Pleasant Valley. County Medical Examiner, Powell
said and examination showed Mr. Ollivett died of a broken neck and crushed chest.*
Charles Baartz, 50, Pleasant Valley painter, described by authorities as the
operator of the second vehicle involved in Dutchess county's first highway fatal
accident of 1949, was injured. He was taken to Vassar hospital and admitted after
being attended for multiple abrasions, shock and contusions of the right shoulder.
His condition at the hospital today was described as good. State Trooper John
Hogan, South Millbrook, Under sheriff Crapser and Deputies Gardiner and Bassett
investigated the accident, which occurred on the slippery snow covered highways.
Trooper Hogan said Mr. Ollivett was on his way to his home from work at the DeLaval
Separator plant, and Mr. Baartz was driving his 1941 sedan West in Dutchess turnpike
at the time of the accident. Trooper Hogan said Mr. Baartz told authorities that
Mr. Ollivett's coach skidded in the snow just before the cars collided. Trooper
Hogan said that a river of a bread truck had told other persons that he witnessed
the accident. The trooper said, the driver of the truck is not known, but authorities
are anxious to consult him to obtain details of the accident. Hogan said that
the only account of the mishap is the one given by Mr. Bart. Trooper Hagen said
that the right front of the Bart car was smashed and the entire front of the
Ollivett coach was damaged. When nearby resident and motorists reached the Ollivett
car, they told authorities they found the driver pinned by the steering wheel
and the dash board. Dr. George Ben vie, Pleasant Valley was called and he pronounced
Mr. Ollivett dead. Private funeral services for Mr. Ollivett will be conducted
at the Allen Funeral Home in Pleasant Valley, Monday. The Rev. John H.Hatt, minister
of the Pleasant Valley Presbyterian Church will officiate. Burial will be in
the Presbyterian cemetery, Pleasant Valley. Fir ends may call at the funeral
home tomorrow night. A native of this city, Mr. Ollivett had resided here until
approximately 10 years ago. He was born July 15, 1917, the son of Mrs. Marguerite
Cassedy Ollivett and the late Harry Ollivett. He was educated in local schools
and employed at the DeLaval Separator Co., for a number of years. Surviving in
addition to his wife, Mrs. Dorothy Vosburgh Ollivett: a daughter, Diane** Ollivett
; his maternal grandparents Mr. and Mrs. William C. Crosby, here; two brothers,
Harry Crosby Ollivett and Warren Lloyd Ollivett, Pleasant Valley; and four sisters,
Mrs. Hull G. Way, Jr. Pleasant Valley, Mrs. George DeLucas, Philadelphia, and
Mrs. Burton Whitaker and Miss Jeannette Ollivett, here."
* My father carried a large iron anvil in the trunk of his car to aid in the
assent of the hill on Traver Road to reach our home there.
** My name is Diane Cassedy Ollivett, not Diana!
I have always know in my heart that it was no accident, and with good reason,
I doubt very much the veracity of the account of the other driver.
My father's death was also my first memorable psychic experience, I knew before
I started home that he was dead, I went out of body with him to the scene of
the crash and witnessed the anguish of my Uncle Bing and though afraid to tell
Mother what I had experienced, tried to prepare her for the horrible news that
my Uncle Warren would soon bring.
This record is for my cousins, Carol who was very young then and Karen who was
not yet born when this happened. Your parents were my life support and salvation.
Aunt Ann to talk to and cry on and Aunt Audrey to keep me occupied, playing with
the new baby, piano and just being good company, like Aunt Ann.. And, dear cousins,
you too played a great part in my recovery from Daddy's death, you were there
to fuss over, play with and love. A love which you both returned to me many
times over.
Aunt Edith and Linda, you and Uncle Hull helped too as did Aunt Midgie and Uncle
George who took me in while Mother went to school. I love you all, but it was
Aunt Ann, Uncle Bing and Aunt Audrey and my friend Margie that were my day to
day support and I thank God for all of you!

Francois (the eldest son), came to this country from Westchester, and on Nove

the Groote Stuck was isssued; actual posession in severalty, however not to take
place until Fall, after the grain had been harvested. The actual actual division
was made in 1682.
"the same year (1680) Gerrit Teunisse asks the Court to compel Peter Vosburgh
to fulfill a contract which the former has made in the presence of witnesses
to sell him (Vosburgh) lad for 120 bevers in six years or sixty bevers cash."
So we see Peter was all ready expanding his holdings before the actual division
of the Groote Stuck was complete.
Further into the book on the chapter, "Land-Litigation", page 63 there is listed
the names of Burger Huyck, Lambert Huyack, Peter Van Alane, Johannes Vosburgh,
Jochim Kallier (proably Collier), Isaac Vosburgh, John Van Alstyne, Johannis
Ten Broeck and Casper Rouse as owners of lands in the Northof Kinderhook and
a grant to Peter Vosburgh of 1900 acres includein the whole northern part of
the district south of Rensselaerswyck and east of the De Bruyn patent, the two
lakes and the Gardinier grant. on page 64 it is indicated that this tract exceeded
1908 acres and had 5 undesignated dwellings upon it. Since this area was the
only in the Valley free of the patroon system, it would seem that Peter and his
brothers and children were large landholders and prosperous.

- The Courier: Poughkeepsie, NY, 04/26/1898. John H. Ollivett
died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Cronk, on Winnikee Avenue, early Wednesday
morning after a lingering illness. About six months ago, Mr. Ollivett was striken
with what appeared to be his last illness. He was 69 years of age, but exhibited
wonderful vitality and clung to the last spark of life with amazing tenacity.
Mr. Ollivett was among the prominent older residents of Dutchess County. In
his younger days he was a school teacher. For many years he had been Justice
of the Peace of the town of Poughkeepsie, located in Arlington, and well earned
the prefix of "Squire". He was particularly conversant with town, highway and
school laws and affairs and his advice to these channels and also on law points
generally was freely sought by residents of the town of Poughkeepsie. His counsel
was valued the same as that of a lawyer. His Justice's Court was no doubt the
most flourshing of any in the county. He tried all of the Fish and Game law violations
for several years and city litigats frequently appeared before him to have their
disputes settled. In politics, "Squire" Ollivett eas an uncompromising Democrat.
In 1896 he was the nominee of his party for Member of Assembly from the Second
District of Dutchess County.
There was much originality about his character. His friendships were strong,
his geniality was proverbial and he impressed his auditor that he ment what
he said.
Squire Ollivett was a widower. He leaves a family of grown up sons and daughters.

Martin Cornelisssen's surname was Van Buren. He was the son of Cornelis Maas
Van Buren and Catalybtje Martense, sister of Jan Martense (de ever) Van Alstyne
(the weaver). Martin's will 1703 mentions his wife Maritje, his children, Cornelius,
Peter, Martin, Maria, Catalina, Magdalana, and grandchildren. He was the great-grandfather
of President Van Buren.
page 94
The freeholder Jan Martense Van Alsytne was the founder of the family in New
Netherland and the ancestor of all of that name resident her for 250 years. From
Hol. Doc., vol.ii, p. 154, we learn that in 1646 he was a resident of New Amsterdam,
and joint purchaser with Hendrick Jansen of a yacht. In 1657 he appears in Beverwyck
(Albany) as the owner of a lot on Broadway. Soon thereafter he became the patentee
of two tracts of land in the present Ulstr County, and somwhat later was the
purchaser of an undesignated tract "behind Kinderhook."
The name is so variously spelled in the early records, both church and civil,
that its original form and dirivation are maters on which opinions differ. In
later years some branches of the family dropped the Van. Mr. Lawrence Van Alstyne,
of Sharon, Conn., states that "records in Holland show a different family to
be of early origin, being traced under different names to the crowning of Otho,
A.D. 936".

In 1671, as joint-patentees with De Bruyn and Lucassen the name of Dirck Wessels
(Ten Brock) and Pieter Van Allen appear. The latter was a son of Lorens Lourense
Van Allen of Albany and a brother of Lourens, the purchaser of the De Bruyn patent.
That same year, by request of the inhabitants of Kinderhook, he and Adam Dingman
were appointed road-masters. He had two ons, William and Johannes, and was the
ancester of a very large branch of the Van Alen families of the country.

Lambert's tract of 698 acres was on the east side of the creek and adjoining
the estate of his father on the west. It included the present Lindenwald estate.
His wife was his first cousin once removed and was evidently much younger than
himself, for in 1713 she married Lambertse Van Valkenburgh as her second husband
and became the mother of five additional children.
