As a girl, her mother and step father in the custom of th 2 CONC e times were often on European tours and she lived at the Susan Morse S 2 CONC chool for girls when she developed a love for faming. (I also believe s 2 CONC he told me that she was related to Susan). 2 CONT Grandmother's step-father drastically dissipated the family fortune, bu 2 CONC t there was enough of her inheritance for Marguerite to purchase her ow 2 CONC n farm when she left college. She was a very tiny woman like my Ollivet 2 CONC t Aunts and me. Yet, she would hitch up the horses to a wagon and go i 2 CONC nto Poughkeepsie to pick up the supplies for the farm from Harry Ollive 2 CONC tt's store. Aunt Hilda remembers his amazement at how this tiny left h 2 CONC anded woman wrote and he said that is why he married her! His childre 2 CONC n remember Harry's great sense of humor and he was a very handsome man. L 2 CONC ooking at photos of Bing & Ed tell you what he looked like. 2 CONT When her husband went out of business (because he was too generous to a 2 CONC ctively pursue those who owed him money), they moved to the farm and wh 2 CONC en he subsequently became a semi-invalid, Marguerite supported her 7 ch 2 CONC ildren in what amounted to a sweat shop, a coat factory doing piece wor 2 CONC k, she and the children tended the farm, Uncle Bing soon left school to s 2 CONC eek work as in his turn so did Ed to supplement the family income. All t 2 CONC his from a woman who had been tended by servants in the true Victorian t 2 CONC radition, from childhood. She once remarked to me that many of her fri 2 CONC ends would just shed and drop their clothes at bed time to find them cl 2 CONC eaned and properly stored when next wanted. " I at least placed them ne 2 CONC atly on a chair." 2 CONT She had the skills of a gourmet chef and baked like an angel. She made a 2 CONC ll the wedding party's dresses for her daughter's wedding with some ass 2 CONC istance from daughter-in-law Dottie Vosburgh Ollivett Lacy. Aunt Hilda 2 CONC 's was 2 CONT a very wondrous beaded affair and Diane's flower girl dress was its exa 2 CONC ct duplicate except for the long train. I, Diane, actually got to do s 2 CONC ome of the hemming of Aunt Hilda's and Aunt Edith's dresses and some of t 2 CONC he bead work. Mother and Grandmother taught me well. 2 CONT Marguerite and Dorothy worked together in the coat factory and that is h 2 CONC ow Marguerite's son Ed and Dorothy met. 2 CONT Marguerite was fluent in French, Italian and Russian and Greek. She al 2 CONC so read in other languages. She read Dr. Zhivago in the original Russi 2 CONC an, translating as she went to Diane who was staying with her for a sho 2 CONC rt time. 2 CONT A couple of years later we re-read the book together, and Grandmother w 2 CONC ould correct the translation as I read aloud from the English. 2 CONT She loved music, the violin being her favorite instrument, but she was v 2 CONC ery skilled on the piano. Son Warren kept her up to date with each adv 2 CONC ance in radio and record players. And her evenings after a days work in t 2 CONC he factory, work until dark in her flower and vegetable garden, were sp 2 CONC ent listening to classical music and reading. 2 CONT She was also a proud member of the United Garment Workers of America an 2 CONC d I suspect a rather active participant in its early days. Yet the gra 2 CONC ndson of her former employer related to me how treasured she was by him a 2 CONC nd how fond her was of her. She did the hardest pieces with great exper 2 CONC tise and ease. 2 CONT I, never owned a coat from a store until well into my teens. With seein 2 CONC g me maybe once a year, she would supply me a new winter coat, the fine 2 CONC st of materials and workmanship in the most up to date styles. Her dau 2 CONC ghters where always beautifully dressed, also by their mother's hand. 2 CONT I was double blessed because the sense of color and style and great abi 2 CONC lity as a seamstress was shared by my mother. 1 BIRT 2 DATE 2 JAN 1892 2 PLAC Newburgh, Orange Cnty., NY 2 SOUR @S4@ 3 DATA 4 TEXT "Saturday, September 20, 1980 5 CONT Mrs. Ollivett 5 CONT PLEASANT VALLEY - Margueritte Ollivett, 88, of Traver Road, Pleasant Va 5 CONC lley, died Thursday at Vassar Hospital. 5 CONT Mrs. Ollivett worked in the garment industry until her retirement. 5 CONT Born on Jan. 2, 1892 in Newburgh she was the daughter of William C. He married Eliz 4 CONC abeth Sherwood, daughter of Dr. Sherwood, a lady of English descent, an 4 CONC d died in 1819, his wife surviving him; she lived to reach the age of n 4 CONC inety-six years. Among their children was Archibald, our subject's fat 4 CONC her, who was born in Ramapo, August 28, 1794, and who engaged in farmin 4 CONC g and merchandising in his native place. In the War of 1812 he was Lie 4 CONC utenant and Adjutant. From 1844 to 1847 he was Sheriff of Rockland Cou 4 CONC nty, having been elected to that office upon the Democratic ticket. At a s 4 CONC omewhat advanced age he moved to Brrooklyn, and died there in 1862, age 4 CONC d sixty-seven years. 4 CONT The mother of the subject of this sketch, Lydia Gurnee, was born in Ram 4 CONC apo, December 3, 1796 and died in Brooklyn, NY, aged eighty-seven years 4 CONC . The Gurnee family was of Huguenot origin, and the name was originall 4 CONC y Garnier, the ancestor living in Paris. Isaac Garnier, a descendant l 4 CONC ived in Westchester County, and died leaving a wife, Elizabeth, and thr 4 CONC ee children, one of whom was Francois. He moved to a place that was kn 4 CONC own as Kakiat, now thw town of Ramapo in 1729. They left several children, one of whom was John J., born M 4 CONC arch 13, 1763, who married Nancy Stryker, of New Jersey, who was of Hol 4 CONC land descent. They left several children, and among them was Lydia, our s 4 CONC ubject's mother. Of her union, four children were born, of whom Abraha 4 CONC m S. is the only son and now the only survivor. His education was comm 4 CONC enced in the district schools and further prosecuted in the Normal Scho 4 CONC ol of Albany, from which he was graduated. Ambitious to enter the lega 4 CONC l profession, he bagan the study of law under Judge Frazer, of Rockland C 4 CONC ounty, later reading with Wilkin & Gott, of Goshen. Shortly after his a 4 CONC dmission to the Bar in 1857, he was appointed Deputy County Clerk under C 4 CONC halres Drake, and served in that capacity for two years, after which he o 4 CONC pened an office for the practice of his profession in Newburgh. 4 CONT While in the main, Mr. Cassedy has devoted his attention to professiona 4 CONC l duties, yet he has at times been chosen to serve his fellow-citizens i 4 CONC n an official capacity. Though invariably declining nominations for le 4 CONC gislative or congressional positions, he has alwasy been willing to pro 4 CONC mote the welfare of Newburgh ny accepting such positions as it has seem 4 CONC ed best, in the interest of the peopl, for him to fill. In 1862 he was e 4 CONC lected District Attonrey of Orange County, and continued in that positi 4 CONC on until 1865. In 1880 and 1881 he was elected Mayor on the Democratic t 4 CONC icket, notwithstanding the fact that Newburgh usually gives a large Rep 4 CONC ublican majority. During his administration the Quassick Creek Bridge w 4 CONC as built, the West Shore Railraod was commenced, and the first steps we 4 CONC re taken to perfect arrangements for the Centennial Celebration. 4 CONT From 1869 to 1883 Mr. Cassedy was in partnership with Chalres F. Since 1 4 CONC 886 Mr. Cassedy has been in partnership with huis son under the name of A 4 CONC .S. & W.F. Cassedy. In 1874 he was made a member of the Board o 4 CONC f education, and served one year as its President, declining nomination f 4 CONC or a second term. 4 CONT Perhaps Mr. Casedy gained greater distinction through his connection wi 4 CONC th the West Shore Railroad than in any other enterprise with which he h 4 CONC as been identified. He was attorney at Newburgh for the North River Co 4 CONC nstructionCompany, that built the West Shore Railroad. In behalf of th 4 CONC e company his firm paid out about $7000,000 to procure the right of wa 4 CONC y through the city and immediate vicinity. He was local attorney for t 4 CONC he West Shore, and afterward for the receivers. In October, 1885, the c 4 CONC ourt appointed him referee in the matter of the foreclosure sale of the r 4 CONC oad, and in November of that year he sold the road at the Newburgh Cour 4 CONC t HOuse for $22,000,000, and distributed the proceeds among the credito 4 CONC rs. It is worthyof note that in making this distribution, he issued on 4 CONC e check for $1,068,000, and three others for more than $500,000 each. F 4 CONC ormerly he was local attorney for the Erie, and now holds a similar pos 4 CONC ition with the West Shore and Wallkill Railroads. 4 CONT For many years Mr. Cassedy has been a Director of the Quassiak National B 4 CONC ank and is also its attorney. His property interests in Newburgh and S 4 CONC t. Paul are valuable and extensive. In partnership with E. T. Skidmore 4 CONC , he bought the A. J. Downing property of ex-Mayor Carson in 1889, and o 4 CONC n a portion of this he erected a handsmoe residence for his family. In 1 4 CONC 861 he was united in marriage with Miss Margaret J. Drake, who was born i 4 CONC n Ulster County and is a daughter of Dr. Charles Drake, a prominent phy 4 CONC scian of Newburgh ad at one time Clerk of Orange County. They have two s 4 CONC ons, William F. and Frank H., and borh were admitted to the bar on the s 4 CONC ame day, the former being in partnership with his father, while the lat 4 CONC ter is engaged in practice alone. Ollivett died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Cronk, on Winni 5 CONC kee Avenue, early Wednesday morning after a lingering illness. About s 5 CONC ix months ago, Mr. Ollivett was striken with what appeared to be his la 5 CONC st illness. He was 69 years of age, but exhibited wonderful vitality a 5 CONC nd clung to the last spark of life with amazing tenacity. 5 CONT 5 CONT Mr. Ollivett was among the prominent older residents of Dutchess County 5 CONC . In his younger days he was a school teacher. For many years he had b 5 CONC een Justice of the Peace of the town of Poughkeepsie, located in Arling 5 CONC ton, and well earned the prefix of "Squire". He was particularly conve 5 CONC rsant with town, highway and school laws and affairs and his advice to t 5 CONC hese channels and also on law points generally was freely sought by res 5 CONC idents of the town of Poughkeepsie. His counsel was valued the same as t 5 CONC hat of a lawyer. His Justice's Court was no doubt the most flourshing o 5 CONC f any in the county. He tried all of the Fish and Game law violations f 5 CONC or several years and city litigats frequently appeared before him to ha 5 CONC ve their disputes settled. In politics, "Squire" Ollivett eas an uncomp 5 CONC romising Democrat. In 1896 he was the nominee of his party for Member o 5 CONC f Assembly from the Second District of Dutchess County. 5 CONT 5 CONT There was much originality about his character. His friendships were s 5 CONC trong, his geniality was proverbial and he impressed his auditor that h 5 CONC e ment what he said. 5 CONT 5 CONT Squire Ollivett was a widower. He leaves a family of grown up sons and d 5 CONC aughters. 2 SOUR @S6@ 3 PAGE 04/26/1898 2 SOUR @S78@ 3 PAGE 04/26/1898 3 DATA 4 TEXT Poughkeepsie Daily Eagle for Wed., April 27, 1898 5 CONT Olivet-In this city, April 26, 1898, John H.
