As a girl, her mother and step father in the custom of th 2 CONC e times were often on European tours and she lived at the Susan Morse S 2 CONC chool for girls when she developed a love for farming. (I also believe s 2 CONC he told me that she was related to Susan). 2 CONT Grandmother's step-father drastically dissipated the family fortune, bu 2 CONC t there was enough of her inheritance for Marguerite to purchase her ow 2 CONC n farm when she left college. She was a very tiny woman like my Ollivet 2 CONC t Aunts and me. Yet, she would hitch up the horses to a wagon and go i 2 CONC nto Poughkeepsie to pick up the supplies for the farm from Harry Ollive 2 CONC tt's store. Aunt Hilda remembers his amazement at how this tiny left h 2 CONC anded woman wrote and he said that is why he married her! His childre 2 CONC n remember Harry's great sense of humor and he was a very handsome man. L 2 CONC ooking at photos of Bing & Ed tell you what he looked like. 2 CONT When her husband went out of business (because he was too generous to a 2 CONC ctively pursue those who owed him money), they moved to the farm and wh 2 CONC en he subsequently became a semi-invalid, Marguerite supported her 7 ch 2 CONC ildren in what amounted to a sweat shop, a coat factory doing piece wor 2 CONC k, she and the children tended the farm, Uncle Bing soon left school to s 2 CONC eek work as in his turn so did Ed to supplement the family income. All t 2 CONC his from a woman who had been tended by servants in the true Victorian t 2 CONC radition, from childhood. She once remarked to me that many of her fri 2 CONC ends would just shed and drop their clothes at bed time to find them cl 2 CONC eaned and properly stored when next wanted. " I at least placed them ne 2 CONC atly on a chair." 2 CONT She had the skills of a gourmet chef and baked like an angel. She made a 2 CONC ll the wedding party's dresses for her daughter's wedding with some ass 2 CONC istance from daughter-in-law Dottie Vosburgh Ollivett Lacy. Aunt Hilda 2 CONC 's was 2 CONT a very wondrous beaded affair and Diane's flower girl dress was its exa 2 CONC ct duplicate except for the long train. I, Diane, actually got to do s 2 CONC ome of the hemming of Aunt Hilda's and Aunt Edith's dresses and some of t 2 CONC he bead work. Mother and Grandmother taught me well. 2 CONT Marguerite and Dorothy worked together in the coat factory and that is h 2 CONC ow Marguerite's son Ed and Dorothy met. 2 CONT Marguerite was fluent in French, Italian and Russian and Greek. She al 2 CONC so read in other languages. She read Dr. Zhivago in the original Russi 2 CONC an, translating as she went to Diane who was staying with her for a sho 2 CONC rt time. 2 CONT A couple of years later we re-read the book together, and Grandmother w 2 CONC ould correct the translation as I read aloud from the English. 2 CONT She loved music, the violin being her favorite instrument, but she was v 2 CONC ery skilled on the piano. Son Warren kept her up to date with each adv 2 CONC ance in radio and record players. And her evenings after a days work in t 2 CONC he factory, work until dark in her flower and vegetable garden, were sp 2 CONC ent listening to classical music and reading. 2 CONT She was also a proud member of the United Garment Workers of America an 2 CONC d I suspect a rather active participant in its early days. Yet the gra 2 CONC ndson of her former employer related to me how treasured she was by him a 2 CONC nd how fond her was of her. She did the hardest pieces with great exper 2 CONC tise and ease. 2 CONT I, never owned a coat from a store until well into my teens. With seein 2 CONC g me maybe once a year, she would supply me a new winter coat, the fine 2 CONC st of materials and workmanship in the most up to date styles. Her dau 2 CONC ghters where always beautifully dressed, also by their mother's hand. 2 CONT I was double blessed because the sense of color and style and great abi 2 CONC lity as a seamstress was shared by my mother. 1 BIRT 2 DATE 2 JAN 1892 2 PLAC Newburgh, Orange Cnty., NY 2 SOUR @S10@ 3 DATA 4 TEXT "Saturday, September 20, 1980 5 CONT Mrs. Ollivett 5 CONT PLEASANT VALLEY - Margueritte Ollivett, 88, of Traver Road, Pleasant Va 5 CONC lley, died Thursday at Vassar Hospital. 5 CONT Mrs. Ollivett worked in the garment industry until her retirement. 5 CONT Born on Jan. 2, 1892 in Newburgh she was the daughter of William C. He was attorney at Newburgh for the North River Co 4 CONC nstructionCompany, that built the West Shore Railroad. In behalf of th 4 CONC e company his firm paid out about $7000,000 to procure the right of wa 4 CONC y through the city and immediate vicinity. He was local attorney for t 4 CONC he West Shore, and afterward for the receivers. In October, 1885, the c 4 CONC ourt appointed him referee in the matter of the foreclosure sale of the r 4 CONC oad, and in November of that year he sold the road at the Newburgh Cour 4 CONC t HOuse for $22,000,000, and distributed the proceeds among the credito 4 CONC rs. His property interests in Newburgh and S 4 CONC t. Paul are valuable and extensive. In partnership with E. T. Skidmore 4 CONC , he bought the A. J.
