Lee died in Petersburg, VA - From Beer's "Commemorative & Biographical Record of Dutches & Putnam County" After completing his education he engaged in Painting in Washington Town.  On the breaking out of the war of the Rebellion he enlisted in the 44th N.Y.V.I and was later transferred to the 146th regiment; he was killed in the last battle of the war, at the time of Lee's surrender.  He is buried in City Point, VA.

08-12-1919                    Brownell W. Lee (son of John W. Lee and Ann Wilbur) died in Poughkeepsie, NY - Notes from Beer's "Commemorative & Biographical Record of Dutchess & Putnam County" - Brownell W. Lee, learned the wheelwright's trade at which he has since been employed having a shop in Arlington, N.Y.  He served in the Civil War, becoming a member of the 61st NY Volunteer Infantry and on his re-enlistment he joined the 66th New York Cavalry, with which he served until hostilities had ceased, when he was mustered out with the rank of sergeant.  At one time he was confined in Libby prison and endured all the privations and hardships of army life.  (Notes from the Civil War Pension Archives show he was wounded in action on July 1, 1862 at Malvern Hill, VA; captured and sent to Libby Prison, Richmond, VA where he remained for about two months and twenty-eight days and then was discharged for his wounds on November 24th, 1862 at Falmouth, VA, where he returned to his home, while the bullet still remained in his body and on January 13th, 1864 he enlisted in Co. F., 12th Regt., N.Y.S. Vol. Cav. And ws discharged on July 19th, 1865 at Raleigh, NC.  Cause of death - tumor of Liver.  Buried in Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery, Section 14, Lot 135, Area 134, grave #2.
